2013 Festival

CARTOONING LIVE! – Central Bandstand – Saturday 3rd August

25 of Fleet Street’s finest cartoonists came to Herne Bay for the day and shared their skills, wit and imagination. Such mayhem and so many bemused faces as events unfolded at the bandstand. such wonder that cartoonists have bodies and arms and legs and everything. Such pub crawlings and eating of fish and chips. such celebrating and making of Herne Bay history … again!

“WAHEEEY!!! What a great weekend! Thank you millie fois!” – Hunt Emerson

The cartoonists were joined by the inestimable Ralph
Steadman, who created a unique artwork for our festival poster and contributed work to our exhibitions.

During a visit to Beach Creative, Ralph got into a bit of a mess!

Just wanted to say thank you again for all your work to make the weekend such a success, fantastic hospitality and a really enjoyable time all round. and from what I could tell it went down well with the punters too. just hope the colossal effort no doubt involved, and the presence of a bunch of grubby cartoonists, hasn’t put you off doing it again some time. Pleasure to meet you, and hope we get back to Herne Bay again before too long ( I didn’t get to check out nearly enough cracking pubs).

Dave Brown, Cartoonist for The Independent.

Dave Brown also managed to sneak this homage to Duchamp into The Independent.

CARTOON GALLERY – Odyssey, William Street – 4th-31st August

Cartoons produced for the festival, inspired by Herne Bay, Duchamp and modern art were on show at our Pop Up Gallery in the town centre. The gallery was visited by over 2000 people.

Andrew Birch cut the ribbon at the official opening of one of our cartoons in public loos.

“Im surprised! This is a good exhibition and I just started the tour.” – From Boughton-Under-Blean
Having a lovely time, seeing Herne Bay in a new light!” – From Faversham
“Excellent – made me laugh” – From Colchester, Essex
“Really enjoyed it – especially the cartoons. Brilliant!” – From Canterbury

“Many thanks once again for such a great weekend. It all went swimmingly I thought, even though only some of us managed
a swim.! Pleased to see so much positive feedback on the bandstand, in the galleries, everywhere in fact.”
– Kipper Williams, Cartoonist

And Herne Bay now has a new public artwork on the back of the Bandstand, created during Cartooning Live by Jeremy Banx.

“Absolutely brilliant, it is quite evident that a lot of hard work and enthusiasm has gone into making this festival the success that it is. Hopefully there will be more events like this in the delightful seaside town.” – From Conyer

“I came on the last day due to circumstance, but have really enjoyed what’s still available to visit. It’s been particularly good to see how the whole town has been involved. The ‘staff’ at each venue (and non connected ones) have been keen to talk and share their knowledge. Excellent opportunity to satisfy my Duchampian obsession and it certainly hasn’t disappointed.” – Visitor from Stockport, Manchester

“I am not only enjoying this festival, I have also discovered what a lovely place Herne Bay is. I shall certainly be returning with others outside the festival.” – From Faversham

“Hi just wanted to say that I thought the festival was absolutely wonderful this weekend. Loved it all, thanks so much for putting this on. Delights me to see such happenings in my home town and I’m just sad I couldn’t make it back down for the midweek events. I hope it’s the first of many dada happenings to come.” – Facebook comment
